California State Capital in Sacramento

Rub elbows with California decision makers at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. With its magnificent architecture and gold domed Rotunda, the State Capitol building houses the office of the governor and the California State Legislature. See historic artifacts, stunning murals and statues and galleries with permanent and changing art exhibits, including 100 paintings of California landscapes and legends. The State Capitol is a living museum that captures the history and culture of California. Walk through Capitol Park, with trees, flowers and historic monuments and memorials over 12 downtown blocks.

Museum Collections & Exhibits

The State Capital features historic artifacts, art collections and exhibits in its grand galleries. The Capitol Collection features 50 permanent paintings of distinctive California landscapes and people. Discover the Senate's Biennial California Contemporary Art Collection, the governor’s portraits and the magnificent statues under the gold dome in the Rotunda. Marvel at two stunning murals that depict California's past, present and future.

Dining & Food Service

The State Capitol offers two cafeteria-style restaurants located in basement and on the sixth floor. The restaurants are open on weekdays, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. You’ll also find a coffee cart and vending machines in the basement.

Are there tours?


Free public tours are conducted every day on the hour, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Guided group tours are also free by reservation. Free films are shown daily, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., in the Basement Theater. Contact the Tour Office at 916-324-0333.

What items are we restricted from bringing?


The State Capitol museum, building and grounds are a working government facility with strict security protocols and checks. Prohibited items include pointed objects, food or beverage, cans or bottles, large bags, aerosol containers, or weapons of any kind. Cameras are allowed in the capitol, but not in the gallery!
